Wednesdays from 3rd May to end August – Bee-Keeping Course for Beginners.
This is a hands-on bee-keeping course aimed at beginners that lasts for two hours, between 6:30pm and 8:30pm. You can book to come any Wednesday evening in the summer until the end of August.
The bee-keeping course is led by John Cook who looks after our bees and hives throughout the year. You will learn the basics of the bee life-cycle and, by using our hives as an example, you will learn how to:
- care for bees
- deal with swarms
- reduce the risk of the cold
- harvest the honey.
We see bees as a vital part of Stillingfleet Lodge Garden – they pollinate our flowers and provide us and the shop with honey. However bees are important economically too – it is estimated that their economic value as crop pollinators is worth £200m per year in the UK alone. As many of you will have noticed, however, bees are in decline, which could cause real problems in the future.
According to the Bee-Keepers Association:
“Bees are in danger of disappearing from our environment. Farming practices continue to disturb the natural habitats and forage of solitary and bumblebees at a rate which gives them little chance for re-establishment. The honey bee is under attack from the varroa mite and it is only the treatment and care provided by beekeepers that is keeping colonies alive. Most wild honey bee colonies have died out as a result of this disease.”
Many people want to help the bee populations and are looking to set up their own hives. If you are thinking of becoming a bee-keeper, this bee-keeping course will give you the information and hands-on experience to do so. You must book in advance for this course as places are strictly limited to minimise disturbance to the bees.
This is what previous participants have said about the bee-keeping course:
“Thank you to John for his time on the beekeeping course He was very knowledgeable on the subject, which he explained in a friendly and informal way. This is a good opportunity for would be(e) beekeepers to get some hands on practical experience in a tranquil setting.
