Monday 3rd June – Painting in the Light with Peter Scott
(first steps in gouache sketching)
Gouache is an ideal medium for ‘plein air’ painting, but it is often overlooked.
In this workshop Peter Scott will explain how this opaque paint differs from transparent watercolour both in technique and result. Gouache has an extremely high pigment content resulting in strong and vibrant colours which are ideally suited for painting gardens. It can also be easily mixed into complex shades using only the primary colours.
He will show how to paint on ordinary watercolour paper, and also on tinted paper to compare the different effects this creates.
Please bring your own equipment where possible – gouache is relatively inexpensive. Most of the required equipment is also used for watercolour or acrylic, including the brushes. Gouache can also be mixed with both these mediums, and others such as ink and pastel, in interesting combined techniques.
Time: 10:00 to 16:00. Cost: £45
Regular visitors to the garden will have seen Peter’s paintings exhibited in the Cafe over the last few years. He is an award winning artist and book illustrator with over 40 solo books published worldwide by major publishing houses. He has exhibited in many venues around the country and has paintings in several public collections. Peter has painted outdoors in varied locations, from heat of Africa to the snows of Canada. He currently runs successful weekly watercolour classes at two venues.
