Exciting Workshops for 2012
Throughout 2012 we have arranged some wonderful workshops for
you at Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens. All of the workshops include
tea/coffee and biscuits and the opportunity to look at books and
leaflets of interest. Attendance at the workshops also
includes free Garden Entry.

Wednesday, 11th January - Growing Vegetables (Part 1) with Tony Chalcraft
An introductory session for those wanting to learn more about the basics of vegetable growing. The
workshop covers: 20 or so main crops and how easy or difficult they are to grow.
Vegetable families and the basics of rotation
What to consider when planning on improving a vegetable garden
Looking after the soil
Sowing and planting techniques
Principles’ of pest and disease control

Wednesday, 25th January - Growing Vegetables (Part 2) with Tony Chalcraft
An intermediate level workshop for those wanting to get more out of their vegetable garden throughout the
year and successional cropping: The workshop covers:
Planning all year round growing
Vegetable sowing and planting calendar
Crops for successional growing
Crops for over-wintering
Growing under cover (cloches, polytunnels, greenhouses)

Tuesday, 7th February - Pruning an Apple tree with Vanessa Cook
This hands-on workshop with the Garden Owner, Vanessa Cook will show you how to prune apple trees to
maximise cropping potential for the year ahead. Please bring your secateurs.

Learn about the many small trees available and their different shapes and sizes followed by a garden tour
to see many of the trees discussed whilst they are in flower, especially Malus, Prunus and Sorbus.

Saturday, 14th April - Poultry Keepers Workshop with White Barn Poultry
This hands-on course is designed for both new and experienced poultry keepers and covers all aspects of
poultry care including:
Positioning your poultry house correctly
Poultry house maintenance
Daily and weekly cleaning
Feeding and drinking
Health care, hands on
Egg laying
Seasonal care
Final questions

Monday, 16th and 23rd April (Morning session of 23rd SOLD OUT) - Willow Weaving with
Rachel Carter
We are thrilled to have Chelsea exhibitor Rachel Carter here for 2 x half day’s willow weaving workshops.
She will show you how to make a willow obelisk and it is just the time of the year to learn as they are ideal
for training annual climbers such as sweet peas, runner beans or any other climber. The class is designed
for beginners and you should be able to make two obelisks to take home in the time available.
Morning Workshop 9.30am to 12.30pm, afternoon Workshop 1.30pm - 4.00pm. Cost: £35.00 including all
materials, coffee and biscuits.

Wednesday, 2nd May - Making Corn Dollies with Margaret Wildig
The making of corn dollies is an ancient craft that can be incorporated into flower arrangements, used at
harvest or as a pretty decoration in its’ own right. You will make a dolly called “A Neck” during the
workshop. All materials are provided but please bring a pair of scissors if possible. Seed will also be
available if you would like to grow your own materials for next year.

Learn about different types of shade, how to improve the conditions and to view it as an asset, not a

Saturday, 19th May - A Guided Walk through Chelsea Flower Show with Lizzie Tulip
Pre-2012 Chelsea Flower Show, renowned York based garden designer (and Chelsea Flower Show Medal
Winner), Lizzie Tulip provides a guided walk through Chelsea past and present. Lizzie will give you so
many practical ideas to take home and implement to give your Yorkshire garden the look and feel of an
award winner. Will explain about designers planting combinations and the many different materials used
in Chelsea gardens and illustrate ways to use these to add character and style to your own garden.
