Wednesday 16th September – A Tree for All Seasons
Choosing a tree to give you maximum interest, from flowers in the spring to berries and autumn colour, making sure the size and shape is ideal for the space.
Small trees are an important feature of any garden and yet are frequently over looked. In this course, which is part of the RHS Get Gardening Week, Vanessa aims to show you the variety of small trees available and how they offer year-round colour from blossom, leaves, fruit and bark.
Learn about how the different shapes of the trees can become an integral part of your garden design and which species offer the best value for year-round interest and how to grow them.
Find out how to choose the right tree for your garden, how to plant them on and how to establish them in the garden. The course is informal and Vanessa will be happy to answer all your tree-growing questions.
We have a large collection of garden trees and shrubs growing here at Stillingfleet Lodge, some of them are quite rare. They are the framework for the planting and a major habitat for the many species of wildlife in the garden.
The course will be illustrated by some of the collection and is an ideal way to get to know the trees here as well as getting inspiration for your own garden. Some of the more interesting trees are
Prunus x yedoensis
Betula ermani ‘Grayswood Hill’
Malus coronaria ‘Charlottae’
Sorbus x hostii
